Ever since the real estate bubble burst in 2008, Spain has been on a downward spiral sparking a financial crisis that has spread throughout the country. At 26%, Spain now has one of the highest unemployment rates in Europe forcing millions out of their homes with over 250,000 eviction notices issued since the crisis began. An average of 200 people are thrown out of their homes everyday, with this number set to increase by the end of 2013. The images in this story document the people that have been affected as a result of the crisis, focusing on those waiting to be evicted from their homes as well as the effect on the Spanish landscape.
This wall surrounds the impoverished neighbourhood of Nazaret in Valencia, Spain. Built in 1992 it’s locals believe that they have been segregated from the rest of Valencia, with the wall being placed there by the government to hide what is truly happening in Spain from tourists and the world.
Jay is 59 years old and has been selling the Big Issue for over 11 years. He is homeless and depends on the money from the issue to eat and get by. He works Monday-Friday from 7am-6pm. In the mornings he works on Waterloo Bridge and in the afternoons he works on Long Acre road in Covent Garden. He used to work every single day but found that the weekends were very slow and he made very little money on them. He buys the Big Issue for £1, which is half the price he sells it for which is £2. Depending on the day and location he can sell between 15-20 issues earning him between £15-£20 a day which for the amount of hours he works is very little. It can be a very lonely and boring job where he may go for hours without selling an issue. He makes the majority of his money through his regulars whom he has also built relationships with. Some regulars have been buying the issue from him for over 7 years. This is something he has built up over time and rarely makes any sales to strangers walking by. People tend to just walk by without even noticing Jay. The ones that do pretend to be on their phones or even on some occasions take a different route just so that they don’t come into eye contact with him. His approach is not like other sellers who shout out “Big Issue” “Big Issue.” He just stands there as still as a statue as he believes that people have a choice to buy and should not be forced to or guilt tripped into buying. He is an intelligent, softly spoken man who has experienced a lot in his life and works very hard at selling the Big Issue in order to survive.
